Reviews: Romania eSIM Providers I Would Book

It can be difficult to pick an eSIM these days with so many providers to choose from. I remember when I first started writing about eSIMs in 2022, and there were only a handful of brands. Even then, comparing plans wasn’t always easy. It’s one of the reasons I started Travlists.

There are far more Romania eSIM options today, but there are a few providers I keep coming back to. Some I’ve personally used, some have been booked by Travlists readers, and others stand out for their plans, pricing, or features. If I were traveling to Romania, these are the eSIMs I would consider booking for myself or recommending to my family.

But first things first: before buying an eSIM, make sure your phone is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible. One quick way to check compatibility is to dial *#06#. If you see an EID (a 32-digit identification number), your device supports eSIM technology. For your carrier-unlock status, you’ll need to check with your current mobile provider.

1. Airalo

Airalo was cited as a Romania eSIM recommendation when I searched on both Google and Bing. This comes as no surprise since the provider is one of the most recognizable brands for travel eSIMs. In fact, based on Travlists’ sales data from January to June 2026, Airalo was the most booked eSIM for iOS users among our readers at 62%, followed by Nomad, BNESIM, and Airhub. I’ve shared more about this data on our eSIM category page, but do note that it does not include purchases from providers like Yesim, Saily, and Ubigi because they do not provide device-level tracking.

But given this, what makes Airalo good for Romania? First, their Romania eSIM connects to Orange and provides speeds of up to 5G. This is worth noting since SpeedGeo, which tests mobile network speeds around the world, ranked Orange first in Romania for mobile speeds. Vodafone, Digi.Mobil, and Telekom followed in that order as of this article’s latest update.

Second, Airalo has both fixed and unlimited data plans that can cover short trips as well as longer stays. Unlimited plans are available for 3 to 30 days, while fixed plans range from 1GB to 20GB with validity periods of 7 to 30 days. Although the plans are capped at 30 days or one month, you can top up the same eSIM if you need more data.

Airalo’s connectivity with Orange and range of plans make it a solid choice, but these features aren’t exclusive to Airalo. Other providers like BNESIM and Yesim offer similar features, with plans starting at around $2.90 and $3, respectively, compared with Airalo at $4. If you’re choosing Airalo for their established name, Orange 5G access, and range of plans, I think it’s a solid choice. If you’re looking for something cheaper, BNESIM and Yesim are also worth considering.

2. BNESIM

Just like Airalo, BNESIM connects to Orange’s network at up to 5G speeds. They also support Vodafone in Romania, which SpeedGeo ranked as the second-fastest mobile network in the country at the time of this article’s latest update. This gives you access to another Romanian network in addition to Orange.

But the two things that stood out to me most about BNESIM are the easy setup and affordable pricing. First, it only took me a few clicks to install BNESIM on my iPhone. I set up the eSIM through the app, and it didn’t take long to get connected. Second, BNESIM has the cheapest starting price among the providers in this review. Their Romania data plans start at $2.88, while the other options I compared start at $3 or more. If you’re looking for a user-friendly and budget-friendly eSIM for your Romania trip, BNESIM would be a solid choice.

Another feature I like is that some BNESIM eSIMs can be reused in other countries, depending on the eSIM model. I learned this when I reached out to BNESIM’s AI chatbot, Ben the Smart Assistant, which I’ve written about in my BNESIM review. If you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you may be able to reuse the same eSIM instead of installing another one.

BNESIM isn’t always the best eSIM for Romania, though. For example, if you need unlimited data for more than 10 days, you won’t find that option with BNESIM as you would with some of the other providers in this guide. Mobile hotspot is also only available on BNESIM’s fixed-data plans and not on their unlimited plans.

3. Yesim

Yesim is all about flexibility. Their unlimited data plans don’t come with fixed durations — you can choose the exact number of days you need within a 30-day period. For instance, if your trip is 14 days, you can get a 14-day plan instead of settling for a 15-day plan like you would with Saily or Airalo. Their Romania eSIM is also flexible when it comes to activation: you have up to 180 days to activate it, which is longer than BNESIM’s three-month period. In terms of network access, Yesim states on their website that their Romania eSIM connects to four networks: Orange, Vodafone, Telekom, and Digi.Mobil. Like BNESIM, I consider this an advantage because it gives you access to multiple Romanian networks.

My experience setting up Yesim on my iPhone 15 Pro was also seamless. It took me less than four minutes to install and activate the eSIM. If you’re also an iPhone user, another feature you may like is Yesim’s free VPN for iOS. While internet restrictions aren’t generally an issue in Romania, it’s still a useful extra if you want a VPN for more private browsing.

One thing to note if you’re getting Yesim’s unlimited data eSIM is that the plan is subject to a Fair Usage Policy. Depending on the carrier, you may only get a certain amount of data at high speed before your speeds are reduced, although your data remains unlimited. If maintaining the highest available speeds is more important to you, I’d consider Yesim’s fixed-data plans instead.

4. Nomad

Nomad is one of the more established eSIM providers, with a large number of reviews on sites like Trustpilot. They’ve also been featured by publications such as The New York Times and Lonely Planet, which helps make them a credible option alongside other well-known brands like Airalo.

When I reviewed Nomad’s Romania eSIMs, two things stood out to me: their plans start at $4.50, and they connect to Vodafone and Digi.Mobil. That puts their starting price on the higher side compared with some of the other providers in this guide. It’s also worth noting that Nomad does not currently list Orange as a partner network in Romania. (I’ve noticed that eSIM providers sometimes change their local network partners, so I’d still check Nomad’s latest network information for any updates.)

But Nomad is not Nomad for nothing. What still makes them worth considering is their free trial eSIM. This lets you try the service without entering a credit card, which is useful if you want to test the connection before buying a paid plan. Nomad also has another advantage that most travel eSIM providers don’t offer: compatibility with certain Windows laptops. If you’re traveling for business or creating video content on the road, that could make Nomad a particularly practical choice.

5. Saily

Saily checks a lot of boxes for frequent travelers, and I would recommend them if you are one. Their eSIM for Romania can be reused across 200+ destinations, so you can easily top it up with another data plan for your next trip. Saily describes this as having one eSIM profile for all your travels. (On their website, I also saw the message: “You can top up an existing eSIM with any destination data plan…”) What this means is that you won’t have to go through the same eSIM setup process every time or keep adding multiple eSIM profiles to your phone. This can be useful since smartphones can only store a certain number of eSIM profiles.

If VPN features are also important to you, Saily would be a better choice since your plan comes with a built-in virtual location feature and ad blocker. Other notable features include an eSIM for cellular Apple Watches and a US phone number subscription that you can purchase as an add-on to your data plan.

Having said this, I would think twice about getting Saily if eSIM reusability and security tools don’t really matter to you. Some Romania eSIM plans from Saily are still on the higher side. For example, their 10-day unlimited plan costs $34.99, while comparable plans from BNESIM start at $33.51 before the 30% discount and Yesim at $35 before the $6 discount. Saily also does not specify their partner network in Romania, which doesn’t help if you’re specifically looking for an eSIM that connects to one of the country’s faster networks.

6. Airhub

Some travelers need calls and texts in addition to mobile data. If this is you, consider Airhub’s Romania eSIM with a phone number. Although they also offer fixed and unlimited data-only plans, what makes Airhub stand out is their 3-in-1 voice, SMS, and data plans.

Airhub offers several Romania plans, but the two I found most relevant are the ones that connect to Orange. You can choose between a UK-based phone number and a France-based phone number. The plan with the UK number clearly states that unlimited calls and texts in Romania are included, along with 15GB of data for 30 days. The plan with the French number comes with a larger 20GB data allowance and unlimited voice, although it does not clearly state whether SMS is also unlimited.

If you specifically need a Romanian phone number, I would get one after arriving in Romania instead. Local mobile providers such as Orange Romania may require identification when you purchase or register a local prepaid or postpaid number, so bring your passport when visiting a store. Another option is to use a virtual Romanian number if you only need a local number for calls or verification.

Romania eSIMs with Unlimited Data

All of the providers I’ve mentioned above offer eSIMs with unlimited data, but their plans and limitations are not the same. If you’re specifically looking for an unlimited data eSIM, do compare both the price and Fair Usage Policy to manage expectations:

Before any discounts are applied, Saily is one of the more competitively priced unlimited options. However, once Travlists’ coupon codes are applied, some of the other providers become cheaper depending on the trip length. Here are the Romania eSIMs with unlimited data that I would consider:

• For 5 days: Yesim ($3/day), Airalo ($3.15/day), Airhub ($3.15/day)
• For 10 days: BNESIM ($2.35/day), Airalo ($2.93/day), Airhub ($2.97/day)
• For 30 days: Airalo ($1.96/day), Airhub ($2.04/day), Yesim ($2.08/day)

Aside from cost, I would also look at the Fair Usage Policy (FUP). Unlimited data eSIMs usually give you a certain amount of high-speed data per day, after which you can continue using unlimited data at reduced speeds. Think of it as getting a fixed amount of high-speed data each day, followed by unlimited data at slower speeds.

• Nomad, Airalo, and BNESIM: 2GB or 3GB of full-speed data per day before speeds are reduced to 1 Mbps.
• Saily: 5GB of full-speed data per day before speeds are reduced to up to 1 Mbps. This makes them a stronger option if you expect heavier daily browsing, navigation, or streaming.
• Yesim: They don’t impose one set Fair Usage Policy themselves. Instead, the FUP depends on the Romanian partner network you connect to, which can be Orange, Vodafone, Telekom, or Digi.Mobil.
• Airhub: Fair Usage Policy applies, but the exact high-speed data threshold isn’t publicly disclosed.

But if I were to pick only one for my Romania trip, I’d go with Yesim, even though they aren’t the cheapest option at every trip length. Their plans are priced according to the exact number of days you need, so a 12-day trip gets a 12-day plan instead of having to round up to the next preset duration. Saily offers a US-based phone number as an add-on to their data plans, while BNESIM also offers phone numbers with voice plans. aloSIM’s Romania eSIM comes with a free phone number and a small amount of credit for calls and texts. You can use the number for voice and SMS, but you’ll need to top up once the included credit runs out.

If you want to keep things simple and get an eSIM that connects to Orange with a European number and unlimited calls (with texts on some plans), Airhub would be my pick.
