Why Use an EasyCard in Taiwan?

EasyCard is a prepaid transportation card in Taiwan that you can use to pay for fares at the airport MRT, city trains, buses, taxis, ferries, and public bikes. Just like the Octopus Card in Hong Kong, T-Money in South Korea, or Oyster Card in London, it will save you from having to purchase single-trip tickets each time you ride the train.

EasyCard users also enjoy various transportation benefits, including 15% off at Metro Kaohsiung and 10% off at the Taiwan Railway. Another fun fact: aside from transportation, EasyCard in Taiwan can also be used to pay for your purchases in select restaurants and shops including Starbucks, KFC, Domino’s, Subway, TKK Fried Chicken, select restaurants in Taipei 101, Watsons, Muji, Daiso, and more. This means that you can go cashless and leave your wallet behind!

How to Top Up

When your EasyCard balance runs low, you can easily top up by visiting a convenience store like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK Mart, and I-MEI Foods. You can also go to the Information Center located at a Taipei Metro or Taoyuan Metro station.

For self-service options, you can also use the ticket vending and add-value machines found at Taipei Metro stations, Taoyuan Metro stations, and Kuo Kuang Bus stations (bus stations at the East Gate of Taipei Main Station, Nangang Transfer Station, Taoyuan Airport Terminal 1, and Taoyuan Airport Terminal 2).

How to Use

Using the EasyCard in the MRT is very easy. Just pass the card over the sensor until you hear a sound. To use your EasyCard Taiwan on a bus, just swipe the card over the reader’s sensor. The same way goes for paying at most retail stores.

  • To enter the MRT gate, make sure to pass the card over the sensor area without waving it.
  • Do not swipe more than one card over the sensor area.
  • Do not place your Taiwan EasyCard near metals.
  • If users swipe the card too swiftly or far away from a card reader, you may not be allowed to enter. Wait for a few moments and pass it over again.
  • If you pass the EasyCard that’s inside a bag, please note that its thickness should not exceed 5cm. You should let the bag gently touch the sensor area.

Some more tips and information:

  • Do pay attention to the card balance that will be displayed on the screen. If the balance is not enough, reload your EasyCard as soon as possible.
  • EasyCards can be used to pay for purchases up to NT$1,000 in a partner store and up to NT$3,000 per day. (The usage limit does not include public transportation fares and parking fees.)
  • Avoid exposing your Taiwan EasyCard to a high temperature. Be careful not to bend or cut it as well.

Getting a Refund for Your EasyCard Balance

While you will not get back the amount you paid for the card, you will be able to get a refund for the remaining balance of your EasyCard. To do so, just proceed to any Taipei Metro counter, Taoyuan Metro counter, or EasyCard service center. The balance will be returned in cash after recycling the card and deducting an operation fee of NT$20. (The operation fee will be waived if the card has been used at least 5 times in 3 months).
