For 24, 48, or 72 hours, you can take the train or subway to get to popular attractions like Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Taipei 101, Shilin Night Market, Ximending, and more. This will help you save money and time, especially if you have a couple of attractions to visit. In a nutshell
- What is the Taipei Metro? Also known as the Taipei MRT, the Metro is the main rail network in Taipei and New Taipei. You can take the MRT trains and subway to visit some of Taiwan’s most famous attractions, night markets, hot springs, and tourist spots. The train system is also widely recognized for its efficiency and comfort, which makes it the preferred mode of transportation among locals and tourists.
- Taipei MRT passes. To get access to the trains and subway in Taipei, our team recommends getting an unlimited travel pass. Tourists have several options to choose from starting at only $4.5, including this unlimited MRT-only pass, this 2-in-1 MRT and bus pass, or this 3-in-1 MRT, bus, and sightseeing pass. (If you plan to take the MRT and THSR, you can save money by booking the new Taiwan Pass here.)
- One-way tickets and transportation cards. Aside from travel passes that provide unlimited rides for 1-3 days, tourists also have the option to purchase a one-way MRT ticket at each train station. Fares typically range from $0.6 to $2. However, if you do not want to queue for and buy a subway ticket each time, you can also just get an EasyCard here. This is a prepaid transportation card that you can use on the Taipei Metro, buses, Taoyuan Airport train, and more after topping up.

Exploring Taiwan via Taipei Metro (MRT) Trains & Subway
One of the things that I loved about Taiwan, specifically Taipei, was their Metro Rail or MRT. My friends and I relied on this mode of transportation on our recent 3-day trip, where we covered several attractions like Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Ximending, and more. I like that the MRT in Taipei connects to major landmarks and tourist districts, and that the trains per se were efficient. Our group of six felt that if the Taipei Metro, which is actually recognized globally as a city rail standard, were not as strategically designed, then we would have probably spent time either taking a cab or walking extra distances to complete our itinerary.
Attractions Near Taipei Metro Stations
Where exactly can you go by taking the Taipei MRT? To help you plan your trip, we’ve listed some of the attractions that are near major Taipei Metro Stations below:

Taipei MRT Unlimited Pass, iPass, or EasyCard?
If you don’t plan to take the train a lot and think that you won’t get your money’s worth by buying a Taipei Metro Unlimited Pass, you can opt to get a prepaid transportation card instead. For Taiwan, this would be the EasyCard, which can be used in subways, trains, buses, and cabs. All you need to do is book one here, top up with credits, and use it whenever to take public transportation in the capital. (Another prepaid transportation card that you can consider is the iPass, which you can get here.)
