Best Overall Japan Pocket WiFi Rental Service Provider

Having been used by more than 23 million travelers (and booked more than 200k+ times on Klook), Ninja WiFi is definitely the most trusted brand among other options. I’ve used Ninja WiFi several times and really liked the strong, fast, and consistent internet connection wherever we went. It can connect up to 5 gadgets easily (with no data throttling) and comes with a battery life of up to 9 hours.

If you plan to book on the official website, you get to choose from two WiFi egg plans: Standard Unlimited and Infinite Unlimited. On the one hand, the Standard Unlimited plan gets you 10GB worth of high-speed data per day and unlimited data at standard speeds. On the other hand, the Infinite Unlimited gets you high-speed data per day with no limits — you are sure to get the fastest internet connection, no matter how much data you use. (When my friends and I went to Japan, we booked the Standard Unlimited Plan. We experienced no speed reduction as we did not use more than 10GB per day. I would recommend getting the same if you don’t plan to use the internet a lot for streaming, games, or work.)

Aside from the flexible plans starting at $3.3 per day, I also like that Ninja WiFi comes with great add-ons and features (which may only be available on the official website). These include:

  • Multiple pick-up and drop-off locations in major airports (hotel delivery also available)
  • Optional 2-way translator (around $5.72 per day)
  • Optional Cellphone with domestic calls (around $3.6 per day)
  • Optional device insurance for the pocket WiFi device (around $2.86 per day)
  • Optional medical insurance for travelers (around $5.7 per day)
  • Optional Welcome Suica Card
  • Optional 4-port USB Adapter
  • Optional Plug Adapter
  • Optional Free Cancellation Policy

Ninja WiFi Airport Counter List: Where to Pick-up a Rental Device

Whether you’ll enter Japan via Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido, or other airports, you can easily find a Ninja WiFi counter. Below is a list of the most common pick-up and drop-off locations:

Japan Pocket WiFi vs. eSIMs or SIM Card

If you are traveling to Japan with friends, family, or your significant other, or if you will visit as a solo traveler with several devices, renting Ninja WiFi’s pocket WiFi is a great way to save money. Instead of booking multiple SIM cards or travel eSIMs, you can just use their portable WiFi to connect all your (or your group’s) devices. Setup is pretty easy — just turn the WiFi egg on and you can connect online right away.

Ninja WiFi also comes with unlimited data, so you won’t have to worry about losing data in the middle of your trip. WiFi eggs are typically rented on a per-day basis, which means you can customize the duration of the rental period to match your trip (which is not always the case with SIM cards or eSIMs).

To rent Ninja WiFi for your Japan trip, all you need to do is book on Klook here or on the official website here. Upon your arrival in Japan, simply show your booking confirmation, passport, and the credit card that you would like to use as a security deposit for incidentals. Your credit card will be charged a minimal amount (for verification), which will be refunded to you immediately. In case your rental device gets lost, damaged, or returned late, the operator may charge your card for payment.

Having said this, you can also consider the following eSIMs and SIM cards if you want to use one for your trip:

Top Providers of Japan Pocket WiFi Rentals

We’ve tested several WiFi eggs for Japan, and Ninja WiFi scored the highest in terms of speed, reliability, and battery life. However, there are a few other options that you can consider, including Japan Wireless (which can connect more devices) and BNE (which is the best personal pocket WiFi device). Below, let’s take a closer look at each of the following providers:

1. Ninja WiFi

japan-pocket-wifi-klook-ninja-wifi-softbank

When booking Ninja WiFi for my Japan trip, I had to choose between three plans: their standard Unlimited Plan, Infinite Unlimited Plan, and 5G Unlimited Plan. On the one hand, the standard plan comes with a fixed 1-10GB worth of high-speed data per day and uncapped data at regular speeds. On the other hand, there is the Infinite Unlimited Data Plan that comes with high-speed (4G/5G) data all the way — but speeds can be reduced during peak hours. The best and optimal plan is the 5G Unlimited Data, which provides consistent 5G connectivity in Japan.

Based on experience, the standard Unlimited Plan was already perfect for my group of 4, who are not heavy internet users. Our casual browsing, usage of Google Maps, and seldom streaming did not finish our 10GB high-speed data allocation per day, so we remained on 5G speeds all the time.

A couple of other things that I liked about Ninja WiFi are that redemption and drop-off at Narita Airport were very easy. We also got to enjoy the add-ons like the Pocket Translator, which has helped us at least two times when language barrier came in the way.

  • PRICE: Book here from $2.9 per day
  • WHAT’S INCLUDED: Internet connection for up to 5 devices, up to 9 hours of battery life, optional hotel delivery, optional 5G plan and device, a wide selection of add-ons (translator, device insurance, travel insurance, & battery pack), & nationwide coverage in Japan
  • HOW TO USE: Choose your pick-up location and select the number of days you will rent out the pocket WiFi for.
  • AIRPORT PICK-UP LOCATIONS:

    • Fukuoka Airport (FUK): 7am-8:30pm
    • Naha Airport International Terminal 1 (OKA): 8am-7pm
    • New Chitose Airport: 8am-6pm
  • BEST REVIEW: “Amazing internet connection, very stable and easy to use. Will definitely recommend it to others if they’re going to stay in Japan. When I go back to Japan, I’ll use this WiFi again in my adventures in Japan.”

2. Ninja WiFi on Klook

japan-pocket-wifi-tourist

This second option is also a rental device from Ninja WiFi, except that it’s offered on Klook. While you won’t find the 5G unlimited data plan or hotel delivery option on Klook, you can receive perks like Klook Cash (cashback) by booking with them. Plus, with Klook, you get a power bank without paying any rental or additional fees! (In case you don’t know, Klook is the leading travel booking app for Japan-bound travelers!)

japan-wireless-pocket-wifi-reviews-hotel-delivery

Choose Japan Wireless if you want your pocket WiFi rental device delivered to your hotel and/or you need a device that can connect up to 10 devices. • PRICE: Book here from $3.45 per day
  • WHAT’S INCLUDED: Connectivity for up to 10 devices, up to 9 hours of battery life, roundtrip delivery to your hotel or accommodation (available in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya), Klook Cash (cashback), & nationwide coverage in Japan powered by SoftBank

4. Global WiFi

japan-pocket-wifi-global-wifi-review-kkday

Fun fact: Global WiFi is a sister brand of Ninja WiFi in Japan. The key difference is that they offer prepaid tourists WiFi eggs for other countries as well. Our team at Travlists would recommend this option to users of KKDay, which is also another popular travel activity booking app from Asia. We also like Global WiFi since it comes with useful add-ons like power bank and universal adapter. (They also have the most WiFi pick-up locations in Japan!)

  • WHAT’S INCLUDED: Unlimited data per day (limited to 10GB per day) or daily 3GB worth of high-speed data, connectivity for up to 4 devices, up to 6 hours of battery life, optional translator, optional universal adapter, multiple airport pick-up locations, KKDay Points (cashback), & nationwide coverage in Japan powered by SoftBank
