What’s special about Yehliu Geopark in Taiwan?

Located in New Taipei’s Wanli District, just an hour and 30 minutes away from Taipei Station, Yehliu Geopark is a fascinating natural wonder no traveler should miss. This 1,700-meter cape, often compared to the terrain of Mars, is filled with peculiar rocks made of sandstone and limestone. The park also features curious trenches, caves, and peaks that offer stunning views of the ocean.

Yehliu Geopark is divided into three zones. The first zone is home to the Queen’s Head, which is perhaps the most photographed rock in the area. From a certain angle, this rock formation looks like a long-necked woman with a crown. It is definitely a sight to behold. The second zone of Yehliu Geopark houses rocks that are shaped like a bean curd and the head of a dragon. This spot is equally worth seeing.

But the zone that our team recommends spending most time in is the third one, which has undergone a recent improvement. At Zone 3, you will find trenches and holes that make it seem like you’re walking on the moon. There’s also the Lovers’ Cave, which is one of the best places where you can take photos. Weather-permitting, you will also be able to get a glimpse of the turtle-shaped geopark from a good height. This requires a short climb up the cliff, but the birds’ eye view of Yehliu will be worth it.

Getting to Yehliu Geopark from Taipei

While the city center of Taipei offers a great variety of historical and modern attractions that can easily fill up your Taiwan itinerary, I would still recommend exploring Yehliu Geopark. This landmark is one of the most unique spots in the region, and you’ll definitely feel like you’ve gone beyond the ordinary after visiting.

If you are not joining a Yehliu Geopark tour and want to explore DIY, you can easily reach the park via bus or train. Here are the best options:

  • Kuo-Kuang Bus Bus 1815 to Yehliu Geopark. This is one of the most convenient options. Just take the bus from Taipei Station, hop off at Yehliu Stop, and walk 10 minutes to get to Yehliu Geopark. The ride will take around 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the fare costs around NT$99 (approx. US$3). (You can pay using cash or an EasyCard transportation card.) View detailed directions on Google Maps or track buses 1815 here.
  • Crown Northern Coast Shuttle Bus 716 to Yehliu Geopark. One of the designated Tourist Shuttle Buses, the Crown Northern Coast makes a direct stop at Yehliu Geopark from Tamsui Station. Compared to bus 1815, which is a local intercity bus, this Taiwan tourist shuttle bus is the preferred ride by many tourists. You can take a round-trip ride for FREE with the money-saving Taipei Fun Pass. You can also pay the one-way fare of NT$90 using cash or an EasyCard (until August 31, 2025, EasyCard or iPass users get 50% off the regular fare). Learn more about the Crown Northern Coast Shuttle Bus 716 to Yehliu Geopark here.

Entrance Fee & Immersive Audio Guide

Taiwan’s Yehliu Geopark is a ticketed attraction. You can purchase a mobile admission ticket here starting at $3.7.

To enrich your experience, we’d also recommend getting an audio guide that will help you learn about the wonders of the park. The audio guide is available in English, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, and you can book here for just $6.45 (entrance ticket to Yehliu Geopark included).

If you are planning to purchase a Taipei Fun Pass, know that you get both free admission to Yehliu Geopark and a free ride on the Crown Northern Coast Shuttle Bus 716. Find more details here. Moreover, holders of this budget-friendly sightseeing pass also enjoy free entrance. (Our team used Taipei Fun Pass during our trip and loved it!)
