Disney Explorers Lodge Hong Kong Guide: Promo Code, Reviews, & Restaurants

Among the three hotels in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, we chose to stay in the adventurer-themed Disney Explorers Lodge. Premium yet reasonably priced, this accommodation that’s only a stone’s throw away from the theme park was perfect for our family of four. Not only did we like our spacious room that had two double queen beds, but we also enjoyed the breakfast buffet experience at the Dragon Wind Restaurant. If you are interested in staying in this property (you should!), you can book a room here — get an extra 3-5% discount if you use our coupon code TRAVLISTS.

In a nutshell

  • Why I chose this accommodation. Sure, there is also the Victorian-themed Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel and this affordable cinema-inspired hotel to choose from, but I decided to book Disney Explorers Lodge in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort for two reasons. First, price-wise, it’s in the middle of all three hotels; and second, we get a unique Disney experience that seems most fitting for our family with no kids. It seemed the perfect option. After staying in the Lodge for five days, we discovered that there were so many more things that make it the perfect hotel choice for families, couples, and groups of friends. More on our review below.
  • Room types and rates. We booked the Deluxe Room, which boasts a view of the property’s themed gardens, for around $246 a night. Other selections include the slightly cheaper Standard Room (located on the first floor of the hotel) and the Sea View Room, which impresses with sweeping views of the South China Sea or the West Philippine Sea.
  • How to book. To save money, I made our Disney Explorers Lodge reservation on Klook here, the leading activity booking app from Hong Kong. (You can get up to 5% off with our discount code TRAVLISTS.) I then linked my hotel booking to MyDisney HK account on the Hong Kong Disneyland app. This allowed me to pre-purchase buffet vouchers (room add-ons and experiences are also available for booking).

What Makes Disney Explorers Lodge Special?

There are three hotels in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. First, there is the Victorian-themed accommodation called the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, which exudes timeless elegance that makes guests feel like princes and princesses. It’s the most expensive property to stay in, but it’s known to give the finest royal treatment for children. Second, there is the budget-friendly Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, which brings to life on-screen moments and characters in fan-favorite Disney films. This is the most affordable option, which I would recommend to large families and groups of friends.

The third one is Disney Explorers Lodge, which stands in the middle ground (literally speaking, it’s actually located between the first two hotels). One look at the grand cabin lodge and you’ll get a distinct adventurer vibe that actually resonated with me strongly. The property is very inspiring and inviting, and, design-wise, I found it to be neutral — something that wouldn’t make my family of four adults feel out of place. (In terms of price, it’s also in between the other two hotels in Hong Kong Disneyland.)

Moreover, many guests who were traveling from the US noted that the concept of Disney Explorers Lodge was unique. The Disneyland Resorts in Anaheim and Florida currently don’t have the exact Disney Explorers Lodge in their roster, so this would be quite a new experience for visitors who frequent Disneyland resorts. (Disneyland Paris has a similar themed accommodation called the Disney Sequoia Lodge.)

Below, we’ll give you a rundown of the things we loved about our stay. However, if you want to compare the prices of the three Hong Kong Disneyland Resort hotels, check out this quick overview:

PROPERTY OVERVIEW BASE PRICE
1. Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel Great for families with kids; offers the full Disney magical experience Book from $250 per night ➜
2. Disney Explorers Lodge Nature and adventure-themed cabin lodge designed with Asian and South African elements; also heavily inspired by Disney stories Book from $199 per night ➜
3. Disney’s Hollywood Hotel Budget-friendly accommodation that’s great for Disney film fans; popular for their Avengers-designed rooms Book from $179 per night ➜

Arrival and Check-in Experience

The lobby of hotels usually sets the tone for each stay, and I knew we were going to have an incredible time as soon as we stepped into the Disney Explorers Lodge’s reception area. The oak lobby, which features tall patterned pillars, bamboo, and a wooden finish, screams posh cabin vibes. It was just a sight to behold.

The check-in experience was also just as delightful. The Cast Members (or staff) at the front desk quickly verified my reservation and assigned me a room. Here are some notes:

  • Toiletries for sale. They told me disposable toiletries are no longer provided in the room (as instructed by the laws and regulations in Hong Kong), so they offered their handy toiletry set for 4 people. Each set costs HK$40 or US$5.
  • Security deposit. I also paid the refundable deposit using my credit card, which was around US$500 for our 4-day stay. (Note that you can ask the staff to waive the deposit for incidentals if you want. However, paying for the deposit means you can just charge meals and other purchases in the hotels to your room easily.)
  • Currency exchange. The Front Desk is said to offer a round-the-clock foreign currency exchange service. (However, this was not something that my family and I tried during our stay.)

Near the front desk, you will also find an ATM and a Power Bank Rental Kiosk.

Rooms at Disney Explorers Lodge in Hong Kong

Quite spacious. This is how I would first describe the guest rooms at Disney Explorers Lodge. All rooms have a 34 sq. m. configuration, which can easily fit two queen-size beds or a family of four. With bed headrests that show Mickey and Minnie in their explorer era, wooden furniture, and patterned floor carpet inspired by the tropics, the room is definitely on point with the cabin theme.

disney-explorers-lodge-vs-hong-kong-disneyland-hotel

The room that my family booked for 5 days and 4 nights was the Deluxe Room, so we got a guaranteed upper-floor room with a view of the lush garden. Disney Explorers Lodge (and the other hotels in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, for that matter) boasts impressive landscaped gardens that truly add more to the overall vibe. (As a tip, know that you can purchase themed room decor that will add character to your room. I have listed the current decor add-ons towards the end of this review.)

While the bath is well put together and maintained, it does feel a bit compact when you’re inside. I would have wished for a different and more enclosed layout that does not separate the sink and bath counters from the shower and toilet.

Free Park Shuttle & Amenities

The next morning, we headed to the theme park after having breakfast at Dragon Wind. (Of course, the biggest benefit of staying in the Disney Explorers Lodge is that we were just minutes away from the attraction.) We took the complimentary park shuttle, which operates daily from 7am to midnight (available every 10-15 minutes). The shuttle picks up and drops off at the three hotels and the Disneyland Public Transport Interchange (PTI), which is near the theme park ticketing gates. (If you haven’t booked your 1-day or 2-day Hong Kong Disneyland tickets, you can also book them here with our Klook promo code TRAVLISTS to get a 3-5% discount.)

Aside from the free resort shuttle service, here are other amenities and services that you can enjoy as a staying guest at Disney Explorers Lodge:

  • Rain Drop Pool (swimming pool)
  • Disney Explorers Lodge’s Unique Getaway Experience. Another reason to stay in Disney Explorers Lodge is that you get direct access to the themed gardens of the property. There are over 700 species of plants in the grounds, which are spread across the Rafiki Garden (South African Garden), the Kevin Garden (South American Garden), the Little Squirt (Oceania Garden), and the Hathi Jr. Garden (Asian Garden). As you explore the huge grounds, make sure to find and take photos of Disney artifacts like the Disney Explorer trunks, shadow puppets of Mickey Mouse and friends, and cultural ponchos. You can also try the go-kart experience in the Kevin Garden.
  • Nemo’s Recreation Reef. Inside the hotel, there is the Nemo-inspired indoor playroom that is available from 9am-9:45pm.
  • Souvenir shop. In case you were not able to shop for souvenirs at Hong Kong Disneyland Park, you can head on over to the shop called The Trading Post. They sell various collectibles, pins, clothes, and toys.

Another cool perk is that all guests at the resort have access to all the recreational centers and activities (and restaurants) in all three hotels. We were able to enjoy the Tai Chi experience at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel with no additional cost. (Other experiences you can try at other hotels include the go-kart ride and the mini golf at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. There is also the Disney Artistry Tour at Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.)

Restaurants at Disney Explorers Lodge

There are three dining outlets inside the Disney Explorers Lodge. We’ve tried the Dragon Wind for breakfast and dinner, the World of Color for dinner, and Walt’s Cafe for a quick bite. Let’s check out each restaurant below:

1. Dragon Wind Restaurant

The Lodge’s main restaurant is Dragon Wind, which is where you can enjoy a filling breakfast buffet with a meet-and-greet with a Disney character. Among so many things, their spread includes a congee station, pasta station, cold cuts, an assortment of bread, salad, yogurt, bacon, sausages, hot dishes, Mickey-shaped waffles, and omelettes. It’s a great way to start your day before visiting the Park.

The breakfast is available from 7:30am-11am and costs HK$328 or US$43 per person. After booking a room, you can prepay breakfast buffet vouchers on the official website or app, or pay the buffet fee on-site. On Klook, you can book this room package for two with breakfast.

Dragon Wind is also available for lunch from 12-3pm and dinner from 5:30pm-10:30pm. Some of their must-try dishes are: Dragon Wind Fried Rice ($39), Roasted Beijing Duck ($70), Lobster Fillets Mapo Tofu ($50), Disney Friends Custard Bun ($24), Scallop Siao Lung Bao ($11), Suckling Pig and Barbeque Platter ($47), Steamed Chicken ($35), and Braised Beef Short Ribs ($37). To sample all of their specialties, you can also get their lunch set or dinner set for $34 and $69, respectively.

2. World of Color Restaurant

If Dragon Wind is all about Chinese cuisine, the more casual World of Color offers dishes from around the world. For lunch and dinner, you can get their Tortilla Bowl ($19), Manhattan Clam and Sweet Corn Chowder ($12), Grilled Steak Ciabatta ($27), Pan-seared Salmon Fillet with Scallops ($35), Grilled Lamb Chops ($33), Grilled Beef Striploin ($33), Seafood Paella ($46), Scallop and Prawn Spaghetti ($30), Pad Thai ($31), and a variety of desserts. (We loved their Passion Fruit and Hazelnut Cake and the Mickey Coco!)

World of Color also has a Halal menu, lunch sets, and a Disney-themed afternoon tea set.

3. Chart Room Cafe

Enjoy breakfast, brunch, or dinner at Chart Room Cafe, a small yet inviting restaurant. Aside from their cups of joe, they have an a la carte breakfast set selection for just $22 (great if you want to skip the buffet). They also have pizzas, stews, and gelato that you can enjoy all day.

Aside from these three restaurants, Disney Explorers Lodge also has in-room dining. Guests are also welcome to try the Enchanted Garden Restaurant at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel and the Ink & Plate Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.

Nearby Landmarks & Attractions

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is not just the main tourist attraction on Lantau Island; there is also the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car and Village. If you are staying at the Disney Explorers Lodge, you can get to this attraction easily via shuttle bus. Simply take the 360 Lantau Open-Top Bus, which picks up directly from the three hotels and drops off at Ngong Ping Cable Car’s Tung Chung Station. From there, you can take the cable car to Ngong Ping 360 Village. (Aside from Ngong Ping, you can also visit the Citygate Mall in Tung Chung. It houses several restaurants and cafes like Blue Bottle, Outback, Paradise Dynasty, and more.)
